Is Omaha Safe?

Omaha, Nebraska, is generally a safe city. High crime is the exception, not the norm. If you’re thinking about moving here, know that in most of the Omaha area, you need not worry about your home being burgled or violent crime.

Of course, what is considered a safe area can be subjective. People from small towns might think a metropolitan area like Omaha is crime-ridden, while people from a big city like New York City or Seattle might be shocked by how safe it feels.

Whether you’re just visiting or moving here, it is good to know the potential dangers out there.

Omaha crime rates

Omaha ranked 7.8 out of 10 in terms of crime, with 10 being the safest possible. Compared to the national average, the city has a higher average of violent crimes and property crimes.

This crime map gives you a good idea of where crimes occur. Most crimes happen in certain parts of Omaha, such as the northeast part of the city. Other areas, such as downtown Omaha and Old Market, are much more secure. You will often see police officers and other law enforcement driving around.

The safest places in Omaha

The safest neighborhoods in Omaha are:

  • Aksarben
  • Dundee
  • Northwest Omaha
  • West Omaha
  • Westside

Real estate is affordable, and neighborhoods are safe. These are the perfect places for families and young professionals.

Another idea is moving to a town near Omaha, such as:

  • Papillion
  • Bennington
  • Las Vista

All these places score better in terms of crime statistics.

The reality of crime

Regardless of where you live, crimes like vandalism, motor vehicle theft, and assault are always possible. That’s just the nature of living in a society with other people. No one is 100% safe from anything.

Do not let the possibility of crime stop you from visiting or moving to Omaha: This is an overall safe city compared to other metropolitan areas’ rankings.

Steps you can take to prevent crime

  • Get involved or start neighborhood watch programs.
  • Secure your property by installing lighting, using security systems, and setting up cameras.
  • Contact the Omaha Police Department if you notice suspicious activity.
  • Be aware of your personal safety by staying out of sketchy areas (especially at night), walking in well-lit areas, protecting your belongings, and, most importantly, trusting your instincts.
